Born to be wild

Remember this post?:

After 50 years of darkness

"A heartbreaking video released by America's Humane Society has captured the moment when a troupe of lab chimps see the sky and feel the bare earth for the first time." news.com.au

Well, apparently the video caused such an effect on the public opinion that the Health Science authority in USA has just made a decision:

"NIH to reduce significantly the use of chimpanzees in research

The National Institutes of Health (USA) plans to substantially reduce the use of chimpanzees in NIH-funded biomedical research and designate for retirement most of the chimpanzees it currently owns or supports." N.I.H.

The victory is not complete, as 50 chimps are to be retained for continuing research, although in better conditions. Time will come when even these will be fred from their chains. Read the full release here.
The USA was one of the few countries where chimpanzees were still being used for research.
